TOEFL Grammar Study Guide Readers of this blog will know that my preferred grammar book is English Grammar in Use (5th Edition). You can buy it on Amazon. I usually recommend it to students who want to increase their writing scores. Since the book is quite long, Ive created a list of specific units that students can focus on (along with a few notes about the reasons for my choices).Before you read the list, though, a few things should be recognized:You really should communicate with a teacher to see what units are best for you. Which Is Greenest, City Living or Country Living

We often equate living in an environmentally responsible way with country living. The imagery is appealing: sun-drenched fields, tender green leaves on young fruit trees, laundry on the line, harvesting fresh chicken eggs. However, the question deserves to be examined: which is really greener, urban living, or rural living? Environmental Arguments for Rural Living Children with opportunities for ample outdoors experiences have frequent, genuine interactions with the natural world. There is some evidence that these experiences have health benefits like reduced anxiety and lower risks of myopia and obesity.Living closer to nature provides more hands-on experience and direct understanding of environmental issues. Witnessing sediment pollution, acid mine drainage, or algae blooms make it more likely that someone will seek to educate themselves about the problem, and perhaps organize their community to find solutions or otherwise take some steps to mitigate the issue.  By living closer to agriculture, one can get to know farmers, learn about the sustainability levels of the various practices they follow, and choose quality local food with a low environmental footprint. When the space is available, rural residents can grow healthy crops themselves or harvest wild foods, reducing their reliance on meats, fruit, and vegetables grown with questionabl e practices and transported over long distances. In addition, backyard food growers can control food waste better; supermarket food goes through distribution and marketing practices that create large amounts of waste.Rural living provides unique opportunities to minimize energy needs, reduce one’s carbon footprint, and lower contributions to global climate change. Less constrained by apartment or condo living, in the absence of restrictive homeowner association rules, and with more space available, rural residents have more freedom to design their own passive solar house, put up solar panels, or even install a micro-hydro turbine. Environmental Arguments for Urban Living Cities are characterized by dense housing, with many more people living in a comparatively small area. This concentrates human land use, easing pressure on natural areas outside the city. Without the high demand for suburban or rural living, there would be much less pressure on agriculture lands and wild lands, less habitat fragmentation, and less roadkill-causing car traffic.This dense urban fabric means small dwellings, requiring far less energy to heat and cool and leaving less room for energy-hungry appliances than the bigger homes typical of the countryside.A walking lifestyle is more accessible in the city, where the workplace may be located within walking or biking distance. In rural areas people are much more reliant on car transportation, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. For those not walking to work or to conduct errands, public transportation options are usually much more accessible to urban residents.Access to quality local food. Surprisingly, it is often easier to find farmers markets in the city, where shoppers can make choices that favor local foods grown following sustainable practices. However, some of the worst food deserts in the country are in economically depressed urban areas, where the only accessible sources of food are convenient stores and fast-food restaurants offering few healthy and environmentally conscious options.While it is admittedly more of a health issue, in the United States water quality is generally better in cities, counter-intuitively. There, everyone is connected to a municipal water source that has been treated and is routinely tested. In rural areas, most people rely on well water, which vary greatly in quality and is rarely tested. Furthermore, the proximity to intensive agricultural operations can increase the chances of groundwater being contaminated by pesticides.Sewage treatment is centralized, monitored, and generally effective in cities. Rural residents rely on a patchwork of septic systems of various ages and level of maintenance. The Verdict In my opinion urban living likely results in, on average, lifestyles with a lighter environmental impact. At the same time, rural life may allow more flexibility for individuals to make personal choices aimed at minimizing ones ecological footprint. How about suburban living? That is a great question which deserves to be explored more in depth soon.

The Problem With Social Security Trust Fund - 865 Words

The problem with Social Security trust fund is that at the present time there is more credit in the trust fund than is required for payment of Social Security benefits. â€Å"By 2027 revenue coming into the trust fund will fall below the level of being paid out, and by 2040 the trust fund will be depleted (Quadagno, 2014).†Meaning there will be not enough money from payroll taxes to pay all the benefits that are promised to citizens. This puts everyone who is going to enter retirement in jeopardy. Even though everyone has a right to deserve benefits in retirement I feel more people should take control over their own funds. Some of the reasons that this could have happened is because of the aging of the baby boomers. Another reason is because the population growth slowed since 1960 when women decided to have fewer children. The last reason this could have happened is because people are living longer than the old days. The baby boomer generations are beginning retirement, this c reates a dramatic amount of people who are needed to use the trust fund. â€Å"In 1960 there were five workers for every single retiree. By 2025 that ratio will fall to 2.2 (Quadagno, 2014).† The problem with this is the policy makers do not know how to solve the problem. Public schools are believed to be inferior as compared to private or religious ones. Though at some instances private schools showed dominance in raw scores, that advantage was shuttered when research was done to take into account aspects of race and gender (Blixen 20). The National Education Association tried to support the arguments that public schools were doing okay b ut the math and reading scores showed otherwise (Blixen 20). This arguments become baseless and the only thing that becomes important to note is that regardless of the kind of school the students went, there was a particular group that showed their prowess and another that failed miserably! Public vs. private education There are many differences between private and public schools. One of the differences is that public schools need to be functional for at least 180 days so as to satisfy the compulsory attendance laws provided by the state. Public schools also differ from the private schools in that they are for free and the state does not condone the taking of tuition fees or other forms of fees from the residents. Most private schools, however, require some amount of fee to be paid by the residents to acquire the materials and other supplies within the institution. Teachers who provide public education are required to be holders of college degrees and possess a license from the stat e while this is not necessary for private school teachers. Public schools are required to accept all resident students who apply for admission and should not be discriminated either on race, sex or religion. Private schools however are selective in choosing their students. Among the factors is the satisfaction with the college experience and achievement motivation. These factors have been said to be the cause in the reduction in numbers of the students and their performance. It has also been noted that the students that were persistent had more motivation than those that were not and were generally associated with college life and activities. The reduction in numbers of the students that complete their degrees has been a topic of concern and has got the attention of the researchers, some of whom have found out that 40 percent and 50 percent of higher education students did not complete their degrees (Donohue an d Wong 188). In trying to explain the cases of the reduction of well performing students and the subsequent reduction of numbers of students that complete their degrees, the two factors-motivation and satisfaction with college-had to be put into perspective as they relate to the so called nontraditional students. The non-traditional students basically constituted the students that were of age twenty five and greater. According to some research, the numbers of these nontraditional students were ever on the increasing and had almost equaled that of the traditional students. Due to the fact that these students have had different life experiences, their motivation and reason for education also differs in the same manner, as a result, their life experiences play a critical role in their college life. Their learning experiences dictate the kind of environment they create so as to meet their educational aspirations (BCPS 4). The attitudes and perceptions which these students have about col lege education (either positive or negative) play a critical role in motivating them to complete their education (Donohue and Wong 188). Students’ satisfaction is known to be a necessity for their continued motivation and therefore predicts success rates in academics. Some time back, college was not guaranteed as the next step after high school and therefore those that graduate from college now may be the first in their families to have graduated (Berentson 2). It is now emerging that college is necessary for the high school graduates. By the year 2007, there had been an increase of the number of students that graduated from high school and attended college. This was at least a 20 percent increase from the year 1973 (Berentson 3). There also were concerns that some students actually studied for courses that were useless for the society and simply could not be applied. In the fields of science and mathematics, it is essential to have a degree but in the other majors, there is hardly any need for a degree. Majors that include liberal arts such as languages, philosophy and history usually don’t come with the skill to handle real-life situations. Some may however argue that the liberal arts provide for and upholds skills in creativity and mechanisms of solving problems. The languages also promotes ones ability to express ones self and improves the writing and reading ability. This, in the long run increases the chances of the individual to be hired. It is difficult to determine whether the college graduate with the papers that prove that he actually graduated or that person that has hands-on-experience and skills but lacks a graduate degree, is likely to be hired. The only reason the graduate may pass the interview is due to the assumption that he might be of help to the company and yet it is sad to know that there are actually incompetent graduates out there. This fact leads to the question that is it really worth it to have college education. Many other options are available and do not necessarily require one to have a four year term in college that is expensive. Such options as joining the military or starting a business do equally successfully without education. It is also possible to start low in a company and with experience, soar to greater heights. It is arguable that with a college degree one could make more money since there is an added advantage and comes in the forms of intelligence and i ntegrity, just to mention a few. It is however important to note that a society is not only made of managers and CEOs. A society must contain even the simplest of persons such as the toilet cleaners, construction workers, electricians, mechanics and the likes. Otherwise what would happen if the above mentioned persons did not exist in a society? It would be chaotic and cumbersome. Success may be defined by the happiness that comes about after a certain job and not necessarily the amount of money derived. Most people, however, choose money due to the fact that it is measurable unlike happiness which is not. Whoever has not thought of a world without liberal arts has not thought of a world that is without history and without philosophy. No arts mean no novels to read and basically a boring world. It has been concluded that the parents’ choice of the number of children she should bare is dependent to the kind of education she will offer her children. The number of children that the parents have will dictate the amount of resources that they would employ in their education (Croix and Doepke 1). Educated women who have higher income prefer to invest on quality education of a small number of children as opposed to the less educated women with less capital and would rather have many children but invest little on each of them. With public schooling, there is no difference in the number of children that parents could have. If the difference in capital of the two groups of women is high, this translates to higher levels of education in the public sector than in the private. Public education removes the difference that exists between the skilled and the unskilled people (Croix and Doepke 1). In the public education sector, it is not the parents that dictate the level of education of their children but it is the government that imposes tax to all adults and uses it to finance the common education level of the children. Parents are therefore not allowed to supplemen t the public education with private education. Under the public regime basically all children receive the same education since it is independent of the economic status of the parents or the number of children in a household (Clark 570). Conclusion It can also be concluded that public schooling can have an implication on the number of children parents can have and their choice of education. In this sense, parents tend to increase the number of children they get once education is provided for with no pay. On the other hand, parents with less than average income dwell more on the child’s quantity and quality and therefore tend to get many children who each receives little education. Within the inner cities and places known to certain people as â€Å"the hood,†there has always been an area of dislike when it came to law enforcement officials. The people that I grew up with and around have always had a certain level of intolerance when it came to the cop vehicles that rode the streets at night, and the officers that were seen during the day. It never mattered how much crime took place within those areas, because the trust for police officers was smaller than the trust held by the criminals within that area. My parents have often held a certain dislike for law enforcement, seeing them as a necessity for certain situations, but the overall reaction towards them has continued to be the same. Cops are simply not trusted within black neighborhoods. This topic brings about a host of questions. Why is that? What can be done? How can this lack of trust be changed, if it can be at all? And this leads me to my subject matter. Within the course of our class, we have talked about a multiple of things that had to do with management within the Criminal Justice field. We have covered everything from courts, to lawyers, to management of prisons and jails. We have looked at how things are run at local, state and federal levels and the topics that most interested me were the ones on community relations and programs. Because I do have family members, friends, and peers alike, who hold law enforcement agents in such low regard, I decided focus my paper on policing black neighborhoods and how to establish a working relationship with those within that community.
